“I Always Wanted To Write” Challenge: Characters

Welcome to my weekly writing challenge.  I believe that all of us have stories hidden within, and some of us like to write about them.  I’d like to invite all of you to join me in a weekly writing challenge.   Whether you’re a writer, or have always wanted to write but didn’t know how to get started with it, I think you’ll have some fun.

Last week I challenged you to come up with some plots off the theme “Pat always knew this day would come.”  Now I challenge you to pick the one you liked the best and describe Pat.  Here are links to my blog with your answers, and here is Cee’s reblog where others of you posted, just so you can remember what you wrote.  If you didn’t do the challenge last week, you’re welcome to catch up with us, or borrow a plot that someone else came up with.  I’m sure they won’t mind, because your version of their plot will be much different from theirs. So pick your favorite plot, sit back, close your eyes for a moment and then tell us who Pat is.  Here are some ideas for you:

  • Full Name?
  • Gender?
  • Age?
  • Physical characteristics (height, weight, build, hair color, eye color, skin color… or for those of you with a sci fi /  fantasy bent… species)
  • Where born?
  • When born?
  • Age at the time of the story?
  • Current residence (nation, state, country, city, whatever defines Pat’s place now…. log cabin, castle, drafty house in the middle of no where, New York City loft…. however you want to define where and how Pat lives)
  • Married or in a relationship?
  • Does what for a living?
  • Something that is uniquely Pat.  This can be an accent, a physical characteristic, a philosophy, a hobby.  For example, my main character, Alice Anne McDonnell is addicted to lists.  She’s always making a list and checking things off.  She is so addicted to lists that if she does something that is not on a list, she’ll put it on a list just for the pleasure of checking it off her list.

You can jot down ideas, or develop them into a few paragraphs.  Do whatever feels fun to you.  The whole point is to take your imagination for a little stroll.  Get its blood flowing and give it some fresh air.

Thanks for playing!

Something for me to write during the train ride tomorrow. 🙂

  3. Patrick “Pat” Kane looked in the mirror at his own reflection, and saw a 6 ft., 3, muscular, lithe build of a 32 year-old man with golden blonde hair, green eyes. He had to watch the eyes, they were deep emerald green with gold flecks. So startling that they made people look twice at him, and he wanted to blend in. So he wore gold-rimmed glasses on his face.

They were fake like his name. He stopped to think. It had been so long since someone had called him by his real name, Alexander DuMont. It has been centuries, and he was born in a country that no longer existed.

Throughout his life had been in relationships, but they only lasted a lifetime.

Now he was Pat Kane digital security expert shuttling between his craftsman bungalow by the office in San Diego and an apartment a short walk from the other office in Rome.

I know I’m a bit late, but here is my character, ‘Pat’. 😀

My name is Hypatia Gwen Amira. I am 18 years old and I was kidnapped four years ago. I’m still with my captors in fact, though it is now by choice. While living deep in the Eastern Woods, I’ve learnt many things, including some harsh truths about my dear Mother, who my father truly was, how to control the gifts I was born with and who my handsome, masked kidnapped was…

It’s a bit lengthy, so the rest can be found here: http://amberrosaliewriting.wordpress.com/2012/04/21/iawtw-characters/ 🙂

    Amber. xx

  6. Hey Chris, I don’t think I realized you had a writing challenge. It looks like you are in the middle of one though, so maybe I can participate after this one! Looks like fun.
